Indriyo K Sukmono Program for Southeast Asian Studies Arizona State UNiversity ========================================================================== The Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia jointly announce Advanced Malay and Indonesian Abroad for teachers, students, and educational administrators The Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay (COTIM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) are now jointly planning a ten-week intensive program in advanced Malay and Indonesian, to be held June 6 - August 14, 1999. This program is being designed to include two basic components: intensive language study in small groups five days a week throughout the above period, excluding a one-week period for field work on individual research topics. It is anticipated that participants will be placed with Malay-speaking families living near campus. The Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian and Malay (COTIM), formerly known as the Consortium for the Teaching of Indonesian (COTI), includes those universities in the United States and Canada which provide regular instruction in Indonesian: Arizona State University, Cornell University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, University of British Columbia, University of California (Berkeley), University of HawaiUi, University of Michigan, University of Oregon, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Yale University. The host institution, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (henceforth referred to as UKM), located near the town of Bangi in the state of Selangor Darul Ehsan approximately 20 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur, is one of the leading educational institutions in Malaysia. A modern commuter train with frequent service links UKM to both Kuala Lumpur and the city of Seremban; and buses provide transportion to Kajang, a commercial center of moderate size. COTIM offered its first program at Universti Kebangsaan Malaysia in the summer of 1998. Though the majority of participants had only studied Indonesian prior to arrival in Malaysia, they found that based upon their knowledge of formal Indonesian, they were able to quickly adapt to speaking and writing in Malay. It is anticipated that the majority of participants in the 1999 program will have only studied Indonesian. With several weeks of adaptation, it is expected that they too will acquire advanced proficiency in formal Malay. Eligibility : Individuals meeting some criteria at minimum, an intermediate level of proficiency in either Malay or Indonesian equivalent to the level normally acquired after two years of university study and a desire to bring proficiency in Malay (and optionally Indonesian as well) to an advanced level are encouraged to apply: All correspondence should be addressed to: Prof. Dustin Cowell COTIM Center for Southeast Asian Studies 1155 Observatory Drive, Room 207 University of Wisconsin-Madison Madison, WI 53706 Please note that all those submitting application forms will be asked to schedule a telephone interview in either Indonesian or Malay.
