+Jeffrey Anjasmara '-------------------------------- Lawyers dismiss Indonesia's diplomatic threat Source: AAP | Published: Monday October 4 8:46:10 AM Australian lawyers involved in the investigation into human rights abuses in East Timor are not perturbed by Indonesia's threat to break off diplomatic ties with Australia. Indonesian Justice Minister Muladi has threatened to cut diplomatic ties with Australia if the International Commission of Jurists investigation, involving Australian lawyers, goes ahead. But the president of the commission's Australian branch, Justice John Dowd, said today the threat would not interfere with the collection of evidence of atrocities. Lawyers, he said, were only seeking the truth and were duty-bound to ensure evidence was available despite what he termed a "public relations" exercise by Muladi. "No Indonesian has anything to worry about if he hasn't committed any offence," Justice Dowd told ABC Radio. "I don't see why they should be so concerned about it. "They don't like what's happening, but it will go ahead whatever they say." The world had set up a procedure for assessing human rights abuses which had occurred in East Timor and made the decision irrespective of Indonesia's perspective on the matter, Justice Dowd said. Indonesia had been making threats for a long time and tended not to carry them through, he said. The Australian lawyers were concerned about collecting evidence, not engaging in a political debate. "Our concern is the evidence," he said. "This is a political issue for the Australian government to take up." ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
