FYI: +++
Gamelan Sekar Jaya will perform a VERY special concert series this weekend at the Julia Morgan Theater in Berkeley. (See all the concert details below.) Both concerts feature a guest appearance by master dancer I Wayan Dibia, performing Topeng Keras (a masked dance). Pak Dibia just arrived from Bali a few weeks ago to teach and perform in Los Angeles; we're flying him to the Bay Area just for these shows. Out two current artists-in-residence are extraordinary... not to be missed! Ibu Arini, regarded throughout Bali (and beyond) as the greatest living exponent of Bali's female dance styles, will be performing Taruna Jaya -- a piece that changed the direction of 20th-century Balinese music and dance. It's a powerful work that reveals her astounding energy and mastery. As one of our musicians said recently, "She OWNS that dance." The other half of our current artistic team -- musician I Nyoman Kariasa -- is also a great artist to work with. He's young, full of fire, and displays all the virtuosity that made his village of Pinda in South Bali famous. This concert will include a piece that made the Pinda group famous, Goak Macok, which Pak Nyoman recently taught to Sekar Jaya's musicians. Hope to see you there!
