Presumably there are employees of Linotype/Monotype among the silent
lurkers here enjoying our conversation...

I wish I knew what hinting is. No, never mind. I don't want to know.
However, our Nazanin has a whole list of defects: could use a few more of
the rarer glyphs (like dagger alif), no embedding, the diacritics break-up
problem, some positioning problems. (Some of these problems were fixed by
Borna but in the process, they ruined the appearance of the font--at least
for web viewing, it's ok in Word on-screen or as a print out.)

But why did Microsoft even pay money for a ready-made font with so many
defects? And why Nazanin? There are so many Persian calligraphers living
within walking distance to MS. As mentioned earlier, Persian experts
don't know anything about computers but they could have easily paired up
an English geek with a Persian calligrapher. Help, I'm so confused!

And why did this guy tell me that the font has nothing to do with the
diacritics break-up problem and that it was a browser problem? Can it
really be possible he doesn't know that it DOES have to do with the font?
(Although IE clearly is smarter than the Gecko browsers in making up for
whatever the font is lacking.)

Borna's contribution (and if you from Borna are also silently lurking I
truly thank you for it :) ) is to show it IS possible to fix these
problems with the font. However, Borna has done a sloppy job so we should
go back and modify the Sina version, not Borna.

I just don't know what to think. If Microsoft gives the world a decent
Persian font which will work on 80% + of computers and perhaps only they
have the ability to do so then I'm the happiest person on earth. And on
top of that, the lovely Nazanin, what could be better?! Here I thought
I (newbie extraordinaire) would have to look into repairing the existing
Nazanin. But what if they on-purpose don't fix the diacritics problem so
that the font won't work in non-IE browsers? What if I want to add dagger
alif but can't because the new Nazanin MS is no longer freeware??
