Hi Adie, You should have no trouble with using low temperature to treat bamboo. The material should be well wrapped in polyethene sheeting and tightly sealed. We recommend 2 layers of plastic – each tightly sealed with as much air as possible evacuated. Each layer should be well sealed. An easy way to do this is fully tape all of the seams. This will prevent loss of moisture in the bamboo. If you are still concerned use tissue to further buffer the relative humidity. If you follow this procedure, you should have no problem. The only time I have seen cracking to wood or bamboo is when these procedures have not been followed.
Good Luck! We are concerned that we may have a crack in some east coast Madagascan bamboo which may have been caused before due to poor storage rather than the freezer treatment? We wrap our objects thoroughly and the computer controlled freezer is very reliable and we have frozen bamboo before Any ideas or previous experience would be appreciated Many thanks Adie Mr Adrian (Adie) Doyle Integrated Pest Management Manager Property & Facilities Management Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG Tel: 020 7323 8207 Mobile 07813 363292 Email: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> The British Museum Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG britishmuseum.org<http://www.britishmuseum.org/> The security classification for this message is OFFICIAL -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Museumpests" group.
