The specialized setae along the posterior margin of the dorsal sclerites also look like Thylodrias setae. No hastisetal brushes anywhere on the body. I was under the impression that the neat rows of hairs across the dorsum, a lack of longer hairs at the tip of the abdomen, and the overall shape were more diagnostic than color. I have seen very similar looking critters of varying color - from light reddish orange to very dark brown, nearly black, which I have been identifying as odd beetles for years. And yes, they curl into a C when stressed. Hopefully one of the entomologists will weigh in. I freeze traps immediately after collecting, using the same procedures I would to de-infest an object. Hello Pestlist, I discovered 3 beetle larvae on a trap of mine under a piece of wooden furniture. I have old photos of other captures I'm comparing this to and feel these guys are either Odd beetle or Carpet beetle. Is there an easy way to tell the difference? Sorry for the less-than-ideal photos of the specimens - one was still alive and moving so I was rushing to photograph it before killing it. The image of a squirming, stuck, larvae will haunt me for a while! Which makes me wonder - is there a 'humane' way to kill a bug on a sticky trap that keeps the specimen in tact? A conservator here suggested maybe a vapor chamber with some alcohol. Any ideas? Thank you everyone.
