Tom we need to be very clear here. People should check with their localities.
Just because a

pesticide can be purchased does not mean anyone can apply a pesticide in a
public use situation. Some states have different laws for home and public use.
Some states change laws and do not notify anyone of the changes which is what
happen with us and the mosquito dunk issue.

Public use is very restricted here. We can’t even use mosquito dunks unless we
have a special category license for public health.

Not true. Because they have a Caution label (least toxic category), most
states do not require they be applied by a professional. Can be purchased on
line at a number of websites by anyone.

They have EPA numbers on them so they would have to be applied by a licensed
pest control operator according to most states. The amazon product does not so
if someone had an RH issue behind a case that was causing silverfish I would
control the RH with the non EPA listed Amazon product to control just the RH.
Any museum worker can treat for RH problems in a collection environment.

I know there is a food grade DE and DE for pools, not sure which is the right

using DE, I have one cat who is very sensitive to flea chemicals and I don't
like the chemicals in my house. I sprinkled the DE on my carpets, left
overnight and vacuumed int he morning. You can even put a small amount on the
cats as it will not harm them, except for the fact DE is a drying agent so it
can dry out their skin and if you have too much on their fur and they clean
themselves it could create some dehydration issues. You find on the internet
some people mix DE and drink it claiming it has health properties--not my
thing, but different stroked for different folks. Anyway, the DE did a good
job of getting rid of my minor flea issue. DE is like talcum powder and the
main concerns are not to inhale it, so wear a mask and lay it down carefully so
not to create too many airborne particles. I have also used DE in my vegetable
garden to get rid of slugs, but then it will kill any soft body insect-so the
good ones too.

Honestly, I never thought of using it in a museum, but in a low traffic area
and caution used when putting it down, it should do the trick. I like the idea
of using it in a museum storage space.

Hello Everyone,

It's getting near the end of the fiscal year, and I am thinking of supplies
that still need to be purchased. I have never purchased diatomaceous earth, or
used it, but am considering the possibility of incorporating it into our IPM
program. We do have some areas where silverfish have been found in blunder
traps.

I would also be interested to hear any opinions from people regarding the use
of diatomaceous earth in museum environments for silverfish, and any other pest
it has shown to be affective against.

Do you just "sprinkle it in the cracks in the floor and/or along baseboard"?

What would be the hypothetical concerns for using it on the floor in a storage
space for prints and drawings?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Todd
