That makes sense, thanks.

It may be very young. They are tiny when they first hatch and go through a
series of moly’s as they grow.

Hello Ozge,

It doesn’t look at all like what is referred to as a larder beetle on these
websites to me:
https://extension.umn.edu/insects-infest-products-and-houseplants/larder-beetles
https://hortnews.extension.iastate.edu/larder-beetle
https://ento.psu.edu/extension/factsheets/larder-beetle

To me it looks like a dermestid beetle of some sort. It is hard to tell from
the photo but some of the features remind me of a buffalo carpet beetle.
https://museumpests.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Buffalo-Carpet-Beetle.pdf

If you have an increase, and don’t know where they are then looking for both an
influx and that they may already be present seems the best course of action.
Additional trapping by doors/hallways. If you can afford any pheromone traps,
putting them out in a wide distribution and adding or moving them closer to
where you are getting more “hits” on your traps so you can then pinpoint where
you want to start spot checking. I had to do this for cigarette beetles at one
point and it was very helpful to narrow down an area before opening and
checking cabinets. We then found lots of activity, but still checked a lot of
cabinets. I checked the pheromone traps 2x a week at first we had so many and
adjusted from there.

I hope it’s nothing, and I hope someone else has a more confident ID for you.
Genevieve

…Ahem, a while ago I had submitted the below inquiry and heard from no one, but
since then I’ve seen some activity, so maybe my message fell through to cracks
because I live close to the western part of the international date line (ie.
most people wrap up their work days when I’m just starting)? I hope so…

Dear Pestlisters,

Do you think this is a larder beetle larva? It is found in our conservation lab
storage where there are leather scraps and other synthetic material along with
paper etc. This is in one of our campuses, where I also found a live carpet
beetle larva.

Also we have been finding an influx of carpet beetle larva in our other campus,
too. I found 7 carpet beetle in every 130 trap this year (1:18.5) and 5 in 130
trap (1:26) in this month only and two of them were alive. The area is 100 000
sq feet (~9300 sq meter). How worried should I be? It is a large area so how do
I find any infested objects if that exists (in the past I found two infested
objects after two different drugstore beetle outbreaks, but those were in our
former storage area which was way smaller). The larvae seem to be concentrated
on collection areas and none yet found in the offices or conservation labs. Are
they trying to find food, or have they found the food source? I’d appreciate
any insight.

Thank you for your time,
