Hi Alan,

I’ve not found adults of the mites before, but at a different location I have
found what I now believe are juveniles/hatchlings of the same species. A few
booklice per trap are not uncommon here, but they’re not on every trap by any
means. I have gone back and looked at the data and the juvenile mites were
indeed on traps that also had booklice on. An interesting theory!

I would be interested in knowing if you find the mites often or not. I find
them in traps in the same areas where I find booklice, which leads me to
believe they thrive in the same conditions.

Thanks very much! I suspected it might be a rove beetle, but I couldn’t quite
tell from the identification photos I found. Good to know neither are
particular concerns.

Best,

Lauren

The beetle is one of the rove beetles, probably Tachyporus species
(Staphylinidae). The mite is a predatory species, possible one of the snout
mites (Bdellidae). Both are accidental visitors, not pests.

Hello everyone,

Attached are two photos for which I need some identification help if possible.
I am located in Cambridgeshire (southeast England) and they were trapped
sometime within the last 3 months. Apologies for lack of scale – the beetle was
about the size of a ladybird (though it’s longer) and the other one (could be
some sort of mite?) was very very tiny, congruent with mite-size. They were the
only examples trapped.

Any help is appreciated! Best wishes,
