Hi Alan (& All), Your interesting observation just had me going back through my data from the last cycle here as I had identified many Bdellidae. I checked the other contents of the traps and it was an overwhelming number of damp loving pests – mostly psocids and springtails, followed by other damp loving mites (moss mites), and a few drain flies and fungus gnats.
So it sounds like you’re onto something! So possibly they could also rely on those damp conditions, or maybe know that’s where the good eating is? -Morgan Morgan Nau Associate Conservator Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Harvard University 11 Divinity Avenue Cambridge, MA 02138 T: (617)495-2254 E: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> www.peabody.harvard.edu/<https://www.peabody.harvard.edu/> She/Her/Hers From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Alan P Van Dyke Sent: Thursday, January 9, 2020 8:36 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [pestlist] Two identification help requests I would be interested in knowing if you find the mites often or not. I find them in traps in the same areas where I find booklice, which leads me to believe they thrive in the same conditions. The mite is a predatory species, possible one of the snout mites (Bdellidae). Both are accidental visitors, not pests. I am located in Cambridgeshire (southeast England) and they were trapped sometime within the last 3 months. Apologies for lack of scale – the beetle was about the size of a ladybird (though it’s longer) and the other one (could be some sort of mite?) was very very tiny, congruent with mite-size. They were the only examples trapped. Any help is appreciated!
