Hi Melanie,

I used to have to do this for grow boxes that were in galleries. Freezing
should be adequate, the longer the better so 72 hour at least – longer if you
can. Remember that the temperature has to get into the insides of the bags. An
alternative would be to heat it (See https://museumpests.net/solutions/ for
details.) As for insects, it could be almost anything that might live and
pupate in dirt. I would also suggest that you put out sticky traps to monitor
the area.

Subject: [pestlist] large amounts of potting soil needed in gallery for
performance art

Just checking to make sure we are on the right track. We have been requested to
put large amounts of potting soil in a performing space next to a gallery. We
are planning on freezing the soil for 72hours with a freezer truck that can get
down to the required temperature. Will this be enough? Or will 48 work? What
types of insects should we expect from commercial potting soil? Any other
precautions we should be taking?

Thanks,
Melanie
