Thanks everyone. Follow up question: what does the group think about the likelihood of the dried cow dung being a food source/harborage site for carpet beetle? Dung obviously contains cellulose and proteins, but does it’s desiccated composition make it less palatable (maybe wishful thinking...)

We also recommend that you do a double layer of plastic – that will reduce the potential of condensation on the object. Anything lower than -20 deg C works. You shouldn't have any problems if you wrap it in 6 mil poly that is as completely sealed as possible to retain the current moisture level (EMC). Allow it to completely warm back up to ambient temp once you remove it from the freezer after the freezing cycles before opening the package. That should avoid any condensation from forming on the surface. The use of a temp/RH probe inserted into the package (and well sealed around the insertion point) would be helpful if available. The object was made in 1996 and has completely dried out. It also arrived with a live variegated carpet beetle within its packaging. We’d like to freeze it—any experience with cow dung at -30 degrees c?
