Jessica - Carpenter ants are nocturnal. After dusk, you must go around your building and find out how they are coming and going. Their natural food is honeydew from aphids and scale insects. I'll bet they have a favorite tree where they are traveling up and down collecting honeydew. What you need to do is find the trail. Once you've discovered it, then use an insecticidal dust in the trail. Once the workers succumb, the colony will die out. Tom Parker

It happens every year (for the three years we’ve lived here) but this year has been especially bad. And has extended longer than it normally does. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this? My landlord is interested in IPM practices. He offered hesitantly to get an exterminator, but he wanted to explore options beforehand.
