Joseph,
I am sure just about everyone on this listserve is more qualified than I to
respond, so take this with a grain of salt. From my perspective engineering
controls such as this may reduce mold or viral load on library materials but is
there objective evidence to support that? I’m not so sure. I’d be interested to
know if the UV is contained and isolated from the accession as UV light is an
enemy of library collections, much like disinfectants and the like. Another way
to significantly reduce risk of viral transmission to patrons would be to
devise an appropriate quarantine schedule for the materials, which could be
based at least in part on some of the research that’s taking place with groups
such as REALM. Aside from engineering controls such as UV light boxes and
administrative controls such as a quarantine schedule, good hand hygiene is
probably best way to reduce risks of viral transmission involving any public
surface, library books included, and it’s very cost effective. Remind staff and
patrons to wash hands thoroughly and often, avoid touching your face and
eating/drinking while using library materials and risk of transmission will be
markedly reduced.

I cannot comment on experience with this sort of equipment because I’ve not
encountered a collecting institution yet that chose to use one.

Good luck,

John Avedian, CSP

Subject: [PestList] Book Sterilizer

Hi All,

Maybe not appropriate for pests, but has anyone had any experience of using
this sort of equipment to clean/sterilize books? In the current climate, many
libraries are dealing with the issues surrounding quarantining books to prevent
potential viral transmission between readers. My main query is how effective
these machines are, and whether they are appropriate for use on collection
items?
