Hi Rachel,

I've just finished doing my own research for a chest freezer for a natural
history collection. I recommend the attached paper to get an idea of the
temperatures needed and the length of time you need to leave items in the
freezer at each temperature (I have Fig 1 taped up by my desk). Strang also has
some suggestions for freezers to look for to make them a bit more affordable,
like commercial "ice cream hardening" freezers.

The trouble I encountered was finding a commercial chest freezer that gets as
cold as I want (reliably) at the price I want. My freezer budget was higher
than yours so I ended up going with a So-Lo freezer (this one
https://www.so-low.com/lab-chest-freezer/lab-chest-40-freezers/CH40-15-Lab-Chest-Freezer,
quoted at $4,195). It's cheaper than the "scientific" ultra-cold freezers that
are also ultra-expensive but can get down to -40, which is what I wanted. We're
buying it to replace an Amana Deepfreeze chest freezer we've had for 15+ years
that just isn't cutting it anymore in size and temperature
(https://www.amana.com/kitchen/refrigeration/freezers.html), but could get as
cold as -20 C.

Good luck!

Subject: [PestList] Purchasing a chest freezer for Integrated Pest Management

[External Email]

Hello,

I am interested in purchasing a chest freezer for the museum where I work. I
have seen some conflicting articles on the desired temperature. Some places say
that it should be capable of reaching -20 to -40 degrees Celsius, where others
say -20 to -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Which is it, and can anyone recommend a
good brand sold in the U.S. that is in the $2,500.00 or less range? Any other
advice sincerely appreciated. The spot where we are going to put it is about
60” wide.

Thank you,

Rachel Minor
