I can say with unfortunate experience that freezing fresh wood can lead to mold growing on the wood. Not always, but it can happen. We had that with a batch of branches collected in the tropics that we thought were sufficiently dry and they grew prolific mold and we ended up having to discard them instead.
Bagging and isolating is a good plan, and heat should also work and hopefully won't make the Salix too brittle. Best of luck Genevieve ================================================= Genevieve E. That would suffice and isolate any possible issues. JTV Joel Voron Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Conservation Dept. Is that with fire and the smoke with carbon monoxide exhaust gas in a chamber?? Or what kind of smoke? How do you practice it? Our educators used a smoke treatment on the wood they were bringing in as a first level effort to remove pests before the material was brought into our treatment area. After it arrived we still treated the wood with a freeze treatment, as I would not have been comfortable with it entering the building with only a smoke treatment. I would feel much the same about using an insecticidal soap as a treatment solution. I agree that a heat treatment sounds like it would work for you based on the size of the objects and your time restrictions. Heating would be the best option. It is faster than freezing and does not require a huge walk-in freezer. You can make an “oven” using black sheeting and a heat source. I was going to suggest using the sun as your source, but I see you are in Minneapolis (I know the weather well being from there) Insectidical soap can’t hurt, but not sure that it would be adequate. How long do you have to prepare? You can also isolate (using plastic sheeting, making a well-sealed bubble. Place sticky traps inside and see what you have. The temperature that you have to reach is only about 150 deg F which will not melt the plastic. Gretchen Anderson Conservator (IPM Specialist) Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Hello all, We'll be bringing freshly-harvested willow branches into the building for an installation, and I'm wondering what would be the best method to treat them to prevent any possible introduction of pests. There are 20 branches, up to 8 feet long and about an inch in diameter, and stripped of leaves. Has anyone had a similar experience? We're not sure if we have the time or capacity for a heat/freeze treatment. Is an insecticidal soap an appropriate option? Many thanks for your thoughts and advice!
