Thank you all for the replies!

Jacob thanks for sharing that! Just to add to that: here’s an article about the
use of oil to free wildlife from the traps. The recommendation is still that
use that as a last resource if we are not able to take the trapped animal to a
wild life center. There is a mention about the difficulties for animals to
survive if released still covered in oil:

How to help an animal caught in a glue trap | Humane World for
Animals<https://www.humaneworld.org/us/en/resources/how-help-animal-caught-glue-trap>

We got some ideas to simplify those boxes still using the fish farming net,
I’ll share the prototype once we make it.

Thanks Fran! that is the plan until we hear about substitutions. We have had
mice, bats and lizards in all kind of locations, outside corridors, big open
rooms, small very interior closets… thanks for the advice, we’ll work on review
those locations.

Nidia, are you noticing this on traps in interior rooms, or is it mostly
happening on bottom floor or near exterior doors of Biltmore House? I’ve mostly
seen vertebrates on traps that are adjacent to exterior doors. Maybe you don’t
need to outfit all 400 traps, but focus on the ones that are most likely to
catch vertebrates? I know that you have several exterior doors and have to keep
windows open, so it’s still a lot of work, even if you narrowed down. If you’re
catching a lot by particular doors – maybe just don’t have traps by those
doors. Place the sticky traps farther in the room. Take note of what materials
in that space are most likely to be eaten by proteinaceous or wooden boring
insects, then do visual inspections of those pieces when you’re changing out
sticky traps. The amount of time it takes to visually inspect will probably be
comparable to the amount of time it would’ve taken to prepare then then ID a
sticky trap in that spot.

I know of two NPS sites that purchased these: Trapper (Protecta) Pest
Monitors<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.domyown.com/trapper-protecta-pest-monitors-case-12-units-p-434.html?msockid=3277615a61986f4d39c4774e608a6e58__;!!AICBUC8eM8hH!n6A95gvayYTq4QEaw6UmY-iVnmqttmnoc4-nkPvGepgTYdLe81ytLKgJkfWWwGAaiwovbSh4YNfAF_H_ReIah2U$>
In the image it looks like a big opening, but when you place the lid on, it
actually doesn’t line up as a large opening. It is higher upfront cost for the
cases, but then just replacing the sticky inserts monthly. The link above is
just one source, but you can also purchase them from Amazon.

Just a few quick thoughts! Good luck!

Following this- we haven't had any issues with rodents in our building, and
we've been freeing geckos using the vegetable oil trick Jacob mentioned, but I
expect we're going to start seeing more soon. Landscaping at the side of our
building tore down a bunch of trees and greenery, and I suspect rodents living
in that will be fleeing into our building to find shelter. I love Nidia's
technique, but you're right, that is a lot of work.

I’d also love to hear of a glue trap alternative, as they are nightmarishly

glue traps with vegetable oil—just gently work it around the animal with swabs,
and the creature’s own wriggling will bring the oil underneath it. Wear
gloves and take care not to cover the animal’s nose or mouth, and be careful
around tiny limbs. It can be a slow process. I keep a syringe of vegetable
oil with me on IPM checks.

Subject: [PestList] Moving away from glue traps

Dear colleagues,

Does anyone have information about substitutions for glue traps on IPM? We have
almost 400 glue traps in a historic house to monitor pest activity and very
often we trap mice of local species of lizards so we want to find an
alternative so it doesn’t happen again.

I’d be particularly interested on connecting with colleagues working in England
since the glue traps have been banned there due to their cruelty.

This year we tested placing one glue trap inside a wooden box with a
Polyethylene net (sourced from the fishing
https://www.industrialnetting.com/cage-netting.html<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.industrialnetting.com/cage-netting.html__;!!AICBUC8eM8hH!n6A95gvayYTq4QEaw6UmY-iVnmqttmnoc4-nkPvGepgTYdLe81ytLKgJkfWWwGAaiwovbSh4YNfAF_H_T_z8_1c$>
). See the attached picture. After 3 months we found it full of insects , so
it seems to work. It’s just a lot of work to build that 400 times for our small
team.

Thank you!
