Daniel Cull, a colleague of mine from National Museum of American Indian did much of his research on "freezing" drums. Here's a link to his paper.

I suggest you look on Museumpests.net for more information on freezing before you rule it out. Ethno and natural history conservators have frozen huge collection en masse and not found any problems with things that many people were dubious about, including hide drums and lots of wood.
