Megan - Your beetle is NOT a powderpost beetle. It is a common ground beetle in the family Carabidae. These beetles commonly fly to outdoor lights affixed to the building, especially in May and June. They hit the lights, fall to the ground, and simply crawl indoors via personnel and roll doors. They are not a direct threat to collections, but their carcasses will provide fodder for carpet beetle infestations. Install sodium vapor lighting on the exterior, door bottom brush sweeps, and otherwise tighten up your building. There are several images attached, and I apologize for the quality as they were taken in a hurry. We have what we think to be an infestation that came out of the blue. We have not found any larve, only 100’s of beetles in similar size to the one in the photographs. Any tips suggestions are welcome! Thank you! Megan Megan J.
