Hi folks-

This is an inquiry from someone off list. I know that museumpests.net was
looking into posting information on bed bugs, but I don't know how far along
that is.

Anyone have any advice? Sounds like OSU is already having problems...

Thanks,

Tara

Subject: [padg] pre-emptive bed bug measures

I am wondering what, if anything, libraries are doing to scan for bedbugs on
books patrons return to the library or what other pre-emptive measures you may
be taking in regard to bed bugs? We are starting to hear about incidences of
bedbugs in our community and from our university custodial service in regard to
university owned apartments, etc. I know this problem is starting to become
more common throughout the US and have heard about library fumigations in
northwestern PA and Denver. If anyone has thought about or addressed this
issue, I would appreciate hearing from you. Related to this, we have wondered
if we discovered that an item was infested before it was discharged from our
circulation system (and hence the tie to the patron destroyed) if this would be
grounds for seeing what other items the patron had checked out? For contacting
the patron to arrange for materials to be returned by a means other than
through our book drops? For contacting university housing authorities if the
patron's address was a university-owned residence hall?

I'm not seeing much in the literature on this, so hope I will hear from some of
you on or off list!

Best regards,

Jennifer Paustenbaugh
