Regarding the "drying out" treatment:
Gasketing with weather stripping and taping holes is good advice. I would
also suggest you monitor the environment in the interior in any way you
can.
Ideally, you should monitor humidity and temperature in the cabinet, but
even a simple indoor/outdoor electronic thermometer would be helpful. (The
home variety, very inexpensive) Note that a heat rise of only a few degrees
may be adequate to dry out the interior enough for this "treatment", so high
temperatures are not needed.
Depending on circumstances, a 100 watt bulb could be too powerful, so you
may wish to start with a smaller wattage bulb and monitor the interior
temperature.

All that said, your insurance company and loss management folks would be
happier if you purchased some inexpensive desiccant packs. Again, seal the
cabinet as best you can. I would suggest using silica gel or hygroscopic
clays, not the chemicals. If you go for a silica gel desiccant pack, note
that this is not an application for Prosorb or other museum showcase
buffering compounds.
Oh yes, monitor if you can!

Dr. Rauf -

Two weeks ought to be sufficient to dry everything out and kill all these
delicate pests. Then use foam weather-stripping around the door frames and
tape any open screw holes. Make sure the interior bottom panel is sealed.

Dear Mr. T. Parker,
How long the bulb should be in the cabinet? If it is removed will they come
again.

Amy -

Simply put a 100 watt light bulb in the cabinet and close it up. The heat
generated by the light bulb will slowly dry out the materials and that will
be the end of the psocids.

Hello,

I am curious what others are using in their collections for general pest
control and if anyone has had psocids visiting their collections. I've just
discovered psocids in an insect and herbarium cabinet and am interested in
finding out if anyone else has had this issue and how it was corrected.

Thank you,
Amy K. Miller
