Hi Pascal,

Without actually examining the item, it’s difficult to determine exactly what
the material is. From my view, the “droppings” might also be from Cockroaches
or Silverfish. Both of these insects will chew on paper and use the book as
harborage. The book is very old and the “paper” might actually be a source of
nutrition for some insects. The book might have been held in such a way as to
be exposed to the environment giving the insects access to the pages. Are the
“droppings” totally dry or can you wipe them off? Are they greasy? Do they
smear?

Hi,

has anyone seen such a damage on a book before?? The book is about 300 years
old and was transported from Yemen to Austria long time ago and is now in the
national library. I think it looks like fly droppings but I am happy for other
suggestions!! We have no idea why this book was so attractive for the flies.
The spots can be removed mechanically and have a small relief, bus some stains
remain.

Thank you very much,

Pascal
