Pascal,

I agree that the damage is most likely fly excrement. In my experience, roach
excrement appears as brown spots on books, but usually on the fore edges, or
the part of the book opposite the spine and there would be additional signs of
damage. We have some experience with fly excrement on manuscripts and paintings
donated to the library and your picture looks identical. Staining will be
dependent upon many factors inclusive of fly, their diet, the substrate of the
material, and for the length of time marked. I would not say that these are
markings from booklice or any other common library pest. Would be interested to
know how well the manual removal goes.

Best Wishes,

Hi,

has anyone seen such a damage on a book before?? The book is about 300 years
old and was transported from Yemen to Austria long time ago and is now in the
national library. I think it looks like fly droppings but I am happy for other
suggestions!! We have no idea why this book was so attractive for the flies.
The spots can be removed mechanically and have a small relief, bus some stains
remain.

Thank you very much,

Pascal
