Outside of managed switches using products like CiscoWorks this is
going to difficult to track each client machine, however, MRTG can be
installed on all client machines and collected together to product an
overall view, also theres a Windows (yes windows - please use rubber
gloves when handling dangerous equipment) products called PRTG, this
seems to be a good choice.
I'll take a look, thanks.
On the face of it I can't see what's so difficult: the gateway has all
traffic going through it and knows which IP address initiated it (or, by
MAC address, which PC). I can't be the first person who's wanted to get
some stats from that info!
I have now found a plugin for IPCop which is aimed at billing LAN
clients for usage (think: Internet Cafe). I don't have an IPCop box any
more but I'll build a spare box up this afternoon if I get chance to
have a play and see if that does what I need.
Putting a monitor onto each PC is an option but the reason I'm doing
this is I'm sure something on the network is using the bandwidth and I
don't know what. That "thing" could be Windows or Linux, and could be a
PC I've forgotten about or one that's found a way in externally (we
don't have wireless access here so that shouldn't be a problem). Pulling
the information from the gateway seems like the best course of action.
Unfortunately, none of our switches are managed :-(
If all else fails theres always ETHEREAL!!!!!!!!
I did look at Ethereal but at the end of the day it gives me too much
information and I can't see how to extract just what I want (mostly
because I'm not really sure what it is I do want!).
