If I wanted to sniff I'd put a hub (not switch) at the ADSL router and sniff the traffic there; I wouldn't see traffic between PCs on the LAN but I'm not interested in that anyway.
I'm going to start with the IPCop add-on (see other post) then maybe try ethereal on a PC on a hub next to the ADSL router and see whether I can make sense of what it tells me. If I can work out what I'm interested in then extracting it I can probably do, but I think I'll fall over on that first part.
