Well, the choice to make here is whether you want to use the graphical
installer or the tried and true terminal. Since my last attempt to use
the installer (ask Stuart) I have decided not to support it at all.
That doesn't mean that I won't help you at all, it just means that I
won't help you use the installer itself.

It would help if you ask more specific questions. For the best
installation experience I would advise the following:
- download an X86 Finnix ISO and burn it
- print the Gentoo installation manual
- make sure you have the #gentoo IRC channel open
- would recommend #gentoo-laptop as well (even for desktop/server)
- if you feel that casual chat will not distract, #gentoo-uk
- (prepare to) order pizza
- boot your Finnix CD and follow the handbook

Some remarks that I'd like to make here and now, as they will save a few
mails on the subject:
- CFLAGS are not magic incantations, the shorter, the better
- You want -O2 in your CFLAGS, -march & -fomit-frame-pointer
- If a website tells you to add more then that: it's wrong, skip it
- USE-flags are a personal choice, don't ask what to set
- emerge ufed, so you have a comfortable way to set USE-flags

The problem with asking people what USE-flags to set is that it is like
asking a stranger to pick a wallpaper for your house. Sooner or later
you'll find something you don't agree on, and you'll have to do it all
over.
I would recommend that you make a choice between Gnome or KDE before you
start installing. It'll make selecting USE-flags a lot easier if you
have decided what you want. The amount of choice you will be offered
here may surprise you...

P.S. If you'd like me to help you install it, no problem at all. I don't
charge anything for it, but arranging food is highly appreciated.
