Given a choice this wouldn't be the hardware I used, but it's what I've got. Recommendations for a cheap-n-cheerful USB wireless dongle that both supports and is supported by Linux would be appreciated (for "next time"). >> Cell 01 - Address: 00:11:A3:02:9B:27 >> ESSID:"MSL" > Does that look like your access point? The ESSID says it is, although to be honest I didn't set up the AP and don;t even know where it is. It's usually not switched on (the cavalier approach to security is not excusable even so). >> Note that about 3/4 of the time I get the "no scan results" response. >> > > That's worrying. The antenna on the dongle is built in (=crap, but should still be functional), the antenna on the AP is good AFAIK. But I'll check this stuff out; having pointers like this to what might be wrong all helps. > Have you set the wep key with iwconfig wlan0 key s:<password> ? > No, but I have set it (I think) using Ubuntu's networking setup tool, which I would guess does the same thing. I've just replaced Ubuntu with Freespire (for a number of non-wireless related reasons) so I'll start again with ndiswrapper and see if anything changes. > Other than that, have a play with iwconfig and ifconfig while > running a ping if you're getting any scan results and see > whether it works at all. > Will do. > Hope that helps, > It does, thanks. It really is about time I got to understand this wireless stuff and I'm (predictably) learning far more by doing it under Linux than under Win*. -- Mark Rogers More Solutions Ltd :: 0845 45 89 555 _______________________________________________ Peterboro mailing list [email protected] https://mailman.lug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/peterboro
