As promised, here are the details of the #linux IRC-channel I suggested:

The most common IRC client for linux is X-Chat, and I would recommend
that you use this. If you are shown a selection of networks, please
select SorceryNet.
Otherwise, use the following:

/server shire.sorcery.net
/join #linux

Please try to use a nickname that I can at least slightly recognize :)
The most common abbrevations in use on IRC:

iirc -> if I recall correctly
imho -> in my humble opinion
rofl -> rolling on (the) floor laughing
rtfm -> read the friendly* manual
utfs -> use the friendly* search
wb -> welcome back
