Re do I have Samba client installed - I THINK I do. I can rad and write to all the other windows shares on my network.

Looking at my package manager I have "samba-common 3.0.22lubuntu4.1" described as Samba common files used by both the server and the client

I do not have the main samba files installed - described as "a LanManager-like file and printer server for Unix" !!!

No wait .... Looking further down I DO have the smbclient installed!
However looking even further down the list I not smbfs - described as "mount and unmount commands for the smbfs (for kernels >= than 2.2.x)

The fuller description says, "If you want to use command-line utilities like smbclient, smbtar and/or smbspool you just need to install the smbclient package."

Is this what I need or am I totally off-beam!

I suspect that this will make a difference?

Nope.

I tried
sudo mount smb //mini/data/DadsLinux/ /mnt/backup/ -t ntfs -o
nls=utf8,umask=0222

and
sudo mount  //mini/data/DadsLinux/ /mnt/backup/ -t ntfs -o
nls=utf8,umask=0222

Neither of which worked!

As the filesystem is remote, the local machine never gets direct access
to the underlying disk, and therefore doesn't care (or even know) what
filesystem it actually uses.

For example a smb share could be using NTFS or FAT on a Windows machine,
but equally could be using EXT2/3 on a Linux machine or XFS or a Solaris
machine, etc.

A quick question. Do you have the samba client software installed, as
they would be needed to allow remote smb filesystems to work (in the
same way as nfs client libraries are needed to allow mount to work with
nfs shares).
