Hi Richard Welcome to PLUG.
There is a meeting next Tuesday (27th) at Peterborough Rugby Club, 7.30pm. It would be great to meet you if you can make it. > I realised that it is going to be difficult if nigh on impossible to > fully migrate from windows to linux unless I am prepared to ditch a > lot of useful software I always thought that until about three or four months ago when I made the switch to Ubuntu on the desktop and Mandriva on the laptop. I have never once regretted the move and can honestly say that except for one application (sage line 50) which I run in a vmware Win XP installation, there isn't a piece of software that I have not found an alternative for. In fact I am currently getting my accountant up to speed with GnuCash with a view to switching from Sage. I fully appreciate that the thought of switching to your chosen distro at an early stage can be a daunting prospect. Linux can be a steep learning curve but then learning Windows probably was too when you first got into computing so it's not an insurmountable task. You just need to be prepared for a little extra work in learning applications new to you and that are outside the comfort zone of familiarity. The more time you spend with linux, the more familiar you will be and therefore the more comfortable you will get when using it. In the end I found that just using linux for day to day computing tasks was the quickest way to get comfortable with it. I would use it until I came across something that wouldn't/didn't work for me and I would then research and correct that one issue, moving on again until another small issue arose and so on. After all, that's how I learnt DOS and Win 3.1 all those years ago. And it works, I am really happy with the way things have gone. So don't discount a full migration just yet, you might just surprise yourself :) Use it, enjoy it and deal with each issue as it crops up and the task just doesn't seem as daunting anymore. What software apps are causing you the most concern. Perhaps the group can suggest some alternatives for you to have a play with.
