Ok guys sorry to bore you again with updates on my endeavors if youarent interested, but I thought I would share my progress with you all on how I am migrating from windows to ubuntu feisty. And I do need to ask one question at the end that I am hoping is pretty simple to answer.
A quick reminder from my last update, I had two problems, one minor, one major, the major one is obviously lack of wifi support for my Belkin 54g card, thats pretty major since I practically live on the internet, and therfore with no gateway to said internet, is really hindering me from using ubuntu even more. Saying that I DO know how to resolve this, by investing in a wifi card with an atheros chipset in it (Linux seems to LOVE atheros), I beleive this is the PCI version of the Netgear 108Mbps Wireless Lan Card (I am currently using the PCMCIA version in my laptop). Saying that I am 'officially broke' until payday so.. that one has to go on hold for now. The 'good news' is that today I DID boot into ubuntu and had a play about with settings and players etc and found that I managed to solve the rather minor yet oh-so-annoying problem of not being able to play videos while in "beryl-manager" mode using VLC Player. I fixed this by choosing to play my feature length DivX encoded videos by appending the Open With Other Application > custom command > and typing "gmplayer -zoom" (without the quotes) (the -zoom bit alows me to adjust the size of the video by enlarging the window, without it, enlarging the window makes the windows bigger but the video stays the same size). I can now do MOST the cool stuff you see on the Youtube demo videos of Compiz / Beryl (eg, playing videos on the sides and corner of cubes, and while in the "alt-tab" windows it still plays). The only thing I am unable to do now is make windows transparent, Im not talking about the old terminal windows that go transparent right through to the desktop background, I saw that Beryl / Compiz now allows people to see other windows underneath other windows. What I thought would be cool is if I could get a terminal window transparently over a movie, so I can be working at a CLI but have a movie playing in the background "behind the text"....obviously never tried this but thought it would be totally cool to try. Can anyone assist with window transparency in Beryl? I am sure I will need more help later as I realise I need something else (I am migrating away from windows remember..) but this is all for now. Many thanks for all the help so far. Also Lookforward to showcasing my new desktop and OS at the meeting, (space allowing) -- ***** Richard Forth "I used to be indecisive, but now, I''m not so sure!" *****
