Which kernel were you getting during the update?
There was a new kernel released over the weekend that fixed a bug in the
previous kernel that broke lots of installs (mine wouldn't even boot!)
It's stable again now, though.
[It makes you realise the advantage of allowing you access to the
previous kernel through the grub menu, but highlights a(nother) problem
with proprietary drivers: now that the Nvidia drivers are keeping in
sync with the kernel automatically upgrades are easy but when you switch
back to an old kernel version the drivers are mismatched and the GUI
won't boot. A quick change from "nvidia" to "nv" in xorg.conf solved the
problem until the new kernel was released a few hours later, but that's
not newbie friendly.]
This is the first conflict I've had from an Ubuntu install, and given
that this is a beta and was fixed very quickly I'm not put off
recommending the final release to anyone who wants to use it.
For comparison, every beta version of Windows I've used (MS call them
"releases") has caused grief during one update or another, which usually
means a reinstall. The last reinstall was to Ubuntu 7.04 beta, and life
is much easier now :-)
