Richard- Are you using vi or vim? I have only seen random characters
with the arrow keys when I use vi instead of vim in Ubuntu.

As for editors, I used emacs and vi when I was in school and when I
started working, the office was using Unix so I used vi. Ever since
then, I have been using vi(m) and enjoying it since. Oddly enough, I
prefer to do my programming using vi(m) instead of the nice GUI
editors that are available today. For some reason, the keyboard
shortcuts have become more efficient for me than using the mouse.
