Me neither, watching this thread eagerly for the answer....

I spun up a Mint Linux live CD (Mint is like Ubuntu with codecs - http://www.linuxmint.com/ ) and I could browse to the file shares on an XP machine. Good start.

Went to the "printers ... add a printer" dialog, found that Windows SMB share was an option for connectivity, selected the XP shared printer from a drop-down box, selected a Canon printer with a broadly similar model number (!), left the username and password at default, opened OpenOffice Writer, typed "Hello World", hit print and lo, it printed !

So at least one distro is happy with using windows shared printers.

It also has the handy option to put in a username and password for the relevant service, which is handy if "Guest" access isn't enabled.
