There was a discussion on the latest episode of LUGRadio and they
mention the reason for lack of ogg support is that none of the DSPs have
the codec builtin for whatever reason.  It is possible to add the codec
at the software level, but this chews the battery up.  Prime case would
be the Archos, saying that though my N800 suffers from that disability too.

Neuros have managed to get the toolchain from TexasInstruments (who make
the most of the DSP chips) as Open Source (minus the debugger), so
hopefully it wont be too long for people to be able to write their own
patches to the firmware to enable additional codecs.
