Thanks for the answer

If I have understood you correctly my code would now be:

rsync -rvt --progress --delete --modify-window=10 /home/edward/data/
/mnt/edward/data/ >phil.log

Is that correct?  Is it a requirement that is NO space between the > and 
  phil.log
