Well my current build project of a mini-pc with touchscreen moved on a
step and then ground to a skidding halt.

Acquired 7" Screen and checked that the display part worked (using my
current Windoze PC) Check!
Acquired Mobo & gubbins and checked that it worked/ displayed by looking
at the BIOS. Check!
Downloaded a copy of Xubuntu 8.10. Check!
Burned the ISO to CD. Check!

Attached a DVDROM drive and tried to run the CD from drive to do a live
test of Linux.

Black screen.

So I tried running the LiveCD version from my Windoze machine. After the
graphical front-end (which may have been part of the cause of the black
screen - my 7" screen only has VGA and this looked a bit higher) I tried
to run the LIveCD and met with a bunch of errors.

Will be testing with a larger monitor some time later today but I've
read through some forums and most of them seem to suggest that there's a
problem with later versions of Ubuntu and the Via Epia motherboards.
Still doesn't let me know what went wrong with my test of the live
version on my normal PC.

The computer I'm wanting to eventually install on is a VIA Epia 5000.
I'm not totally set on Xubuntu I just need a small customisable distro
with a minimal front end (Really the only thing I want running in the
foreground for most of the time is a front-end with pressable 'buttons'
probably done via a fullscreen browser implementation so I really have
no need of a full WIMP environment. More like an MP environment really.
No real need for Windows or icons).

My main PC is an AMD Athlon. Single core. I'm at work at the moment so I
don't know the precise model.

If anyone has any experience with Xubuntu - especially with VIA
motherboards - I would be extremely grateful for your help. Might take
it to our next meeting, but I don't have a case for it yet (Making a
custom one - perk of having a Dad who owns a vacuum forming machine),
would there be any problems with me bringing it along and running it
Sans case?

Regards,

Timothy
