Hi Phil, I have now tried the things you have suggested, the answer to "what
does lspci etc" do is this INTEL CORPORATION 82801H (ICH8 FAMILY) HD AUDIO
CONTROLLER (REV 03), and the answer to "alsaunmute" is this NO SOUND CARDS
FOUND
I have been to other link and I get so far but at one point I donot know
what put in the command line.
Perhaps I leave it until I can get to meeting.
Once again many thanks for your help

The Laptop is a Medion MD96640 with a intell core2 processor but the
only information I can get about the sound system is that it is
REALTEK hd audio (driver date 20/12/2007 & driver version 6.0.1.5532)
what does lspci | grep Audio reveal from the command line ?
also try alsaunmute from the command line and see what it says or does.
This might have some hints :-
