My 3 Huawei dongle in Costessey just outside of Norwich either works
with about 3 meg, or not at all with lots of swearing to get
connected. (ahem I'm in windows so I cant say about linux availability
- but the problem is signal not windows here)

If you're plugging into a desktop then I found I had to run a usb
cable upto my window sill and have it on there, not just plugged into
the front of the box under my desk. In the city on my Acer it never
has a problem.

I think (i would need to check (and could be imagining it)) that it
actually has an external antenna connector ....

The other thing for people to realize (maybe not relevant to you
Steve) is that the payment plans are different - I think 02 might be
more expensive month-by-month but for people having an "emergency my
adsl is borked" route, they do offer a per-day topup.
