Depends on from where you look,. Looking from the UK at Europe and the USA, what you say is certainly true and may remain so for some time to come. Looking from the point of view of the rest of the world (which is of course the vast majority of people) Windows is often something they can ill afford which means Linux is a viable alternative in their markets. Linux is highly prevalent in parts of South America and China and India too, in fact in most of the emerging nations. The Windows pundits are fond of saying Linux has only a few % of the market share, but the only market they measure is the US and Europe. If you could actually measure the shares in the world as a whole, I strongly suspect Linux would be the majority desktop.
