Have a look at NethServer 7... That's a spin-off of old e-smith server...
Although Samba 4.0 allows you to create an AD you will not have the same
tight integration as a Windows Server... GPO policies works with Windows
clients but Linux desktops don't have registry...
For small environments, Samba for file sharing, CUPS for print sharing,
setup a DNS caching environment, use KVM for extra goodies and you'll be
happy.
I'm using NethServer 6.8... Samba 3.x, DNS caching works reasonably well
but can't use KVM because I'm running that on Atom CPU without VX-T
extensions...

the well know other OS but also really minimal requirement for
downtime, and so on. The thing is, I know how to install a Linux (let
it be CentOS, Debian or Ubuntu), join it to a active Windows domain,
setup some shares, setup web server. I have no idea how to reverse the
situation and have Linux in the center of the network.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, including obese pdfs or boring URL's :)
