Hi group.
I am currently interested in Opensuse Leap 15.4 and running a Samba server
to predominantly Windows 10 client PCs. This is the system that is going
in at my work place, Nene Valley Railway. We are replacing our current
system which is basically a group of old PCs running Windows 7 all sharing
space on a bigger PC with some added backup capability. The system is old
and has never been ‘administered’ so has problems.

A couple of people suggested we do it ourselves with the setup described
above running on an HP Server we have had donated. A couple of guys are
reasonably knowledgable about Linux and Samba but neither has ever
configured a server specifically to do what we want.

I know little about Linux though many years ago I knew a bit about Solaris.
I know zilch about Samba and even less about the way windows handles shares
etc.

To help me get to grips with all this I bought myself a secondhand HP
Proliant dl380 g7 with 2x Xeon ES560 CPUs it has 3 x 135Gb drives
configured RAID5 and 3 x 200Gb drives also configured RAID5 That lot was
only £90 from a nice man in Kettering.
I have installed SUSE and Samba and edited the samba.conf file to a form
that works for my colleague though it doesn’t yet work for me. My Windows
clients are not the same as his so no surprises there. My questions are
going to be generally around overcoming problems both in the administration
and tuning of SUSE and in making the server at least visible to clients.

I’m also a sociable sort of person so happy to meet people for drinks,
coffee or alcohol. I live in Werrington and don’t mind driving to meet and
socialise.
