Hi all,

Please find below a proposed agenda for the meetup tomorrow. As ever
all comments and suggestions are welcomed. Any contributions you have
time to prepare ahead of the meeting will be much appreciated by all.
As discussed below, I hope we can plan themes for the next 6 months at
this meetup so that in future there is much more time for people to
prepare any contributions or technical questions they have. I have
introduced some new topics for the meeting to test out.

There is a lot to get through so to aid time management I have added
estimated times for each topic. We can review timings at the meeting.

Agenda for Peterborough Linux User Group Meeting 05Oct22
--------------------------------------------------------

1. Introductions (5-10 mins):
----------------------------
Clive to introduce the space. New attendees are invitied to introduce
themselves and say something about how and why they got into Linux and
Open Source software and the amount of experience they have, including
any specialities.

2. Hardware - Anti-Static Precautions (5 mins):
----------------------------------------------
To get the best out of the software sometimes you have to tear a
machine apart. If you are into controlling hardware you will be
handling sensitive electronic components. In both cases you will need
to take anti-static precautions. Clive to say a few words about the
simple precautions that can be taken for one-off situations and what
equipment you could usefully employ if handling sensitive components on
a more regular basis.

3. Linux and Open Software News (10 mins):
-----------------------------------------
We did not have time to cover this last time but I think it could
usefully become a permanent feature of the Agenda.

An update on new Linux trends and new or updated Open Source
software. Perhaps members subscribing to Linux Format and/or Linux
Magazine could take a lead here (offers?). Contributions welcomed.

4. Design Challenge (10 mins):
-----------------------------
To add a level of fun and competitive interest I thought we could
introduce a design challenge. To kick this section off, I challenge the
meeting to come up with a better cheaper solution than the one I ended
up designing to provide the network solution for the meeting. It turned
out to be a more interesting exercise than I expected. So what is the
cheapest and simplest method of providing wired and wireless internet
access when you only have access to a wifi link that has a staff-only
password that must remain secret from all attendees, except me (Clive)?

5. Online Presence (15 mins):
----------------------------
Review Peterborough LUG wiki, Mailing List, Discord group and any
further options. Clive to provide update following action at previous
meeting. Link to wiki: https://www.peterboro.lug.org.uk/wiki/
There is a plan to submit updates to the wiki to the Mailing List for
approval.

6. Themes for Future Meetings (15 mins):
---------------------------------------
Select topics by popularity and diarise main themes for future meetings
for the next 6 months. Assign sponsors.

7. Main Theme: The Linux Desktop (30 mins):
------------------------------------------
I am suggesting this topic as the main theme because it requires little
or no preparation and has already been requested. As with all things
Linux and Open Source there are so many ways of doing things it is
always instructive to see what choices people have made and why. It
would be great to do a straw poll of all the desktop distributions in
use and gain an understanding of the reasons for people's choices. It
would also be great to see how they have been configured. Please bring
any screenshots you can or even better perhaps a configured live
distribution we can boot into at the meeting. I will configure my own
desktop on the machine I will be bringing to the meeting.

8. Updates on Projects Discussed at Previous Meetings (20 mins):
---------------------------------------------------------------
Nige your time to shine. It would be very interesting to get an update
on the move from a Windows server to a Linux server/NAS server. Plus
what are your plans for that rather impressive looking HP server?

Also Nige, have you been able to obtain reasonable performance from
your HP laptop running Linux? What configuration changes have you made
and which desktop distribution have you chosen? Are there any
measurable results you can report to the meeting? Do all the
peripherals (wifi, card reader, etc.) work?

9. Wash-up (5 mins):
-------------------
Make any immediate comments on the meeting, meeting space, etc. Take
any suggestions for improvements.

Confirm the date and primary theme for the next meeting.

Close.

----------
End Agenda

I hope this is OK. I will print out copies for the meeting.

Best regards,

Clive
