bingo - and users aren't setting 
--with-wrapper-ldflags=-Wl,-rpath,${prefix}/lib

imho it's a bug and should be considered a part of the "minimal" flags - 
Hopefully I can get Jeff's patch or that it gets finished/resolved 
before SC12
