Obama to clarify his stance on encryption by the holidays

The Obama administration plans to clarify its stance on strong
encryption before Washington shuts down for the holidays.
Administration officials met Thursday with the civil-society
groups behind a petition urging the White House to back strong,
end-to-end encryption over the objections of some
law-enforcement and intelligence professionals.

I stand by my prediction that the odds are better than 2:1 that the
U.S. government will order backdoors into major firms' encryption systems
within five years. A different president could do it an instant, and
every "terrorist" attack that authorities can try pin on encryption --
the accuracy or inaccuracy of such claims are irrelevant to public
opinion and politicians -- the faster this will come, especially after
other countries around the world institute similar demands (the UK is
already doing this).
