Does Google need its own TV channel?
Does @Google need it's own TV channel? We were joking around on Twitter
about a "Google+" streaming service, since so many cable channels have
branded with a trailing "+" sign. And there's still nostalgia for the
Google+ social media service now long gone. But here's a thought ...
Could @Google, its users, and the broader global community benefit
from an actual Google channel? Not on cable we assume, but what about
a 24/7 stream on @YouTube ? Let's think about this, how might this
work? ...
Obviously. @Google has a range of resources for its users, and many
tutorial and educational videos on demand. But many, many people still
prefer to watch curated, "linear" live channels, rather than go
digging around for on-demand titles. Could a Google channel do this?
Oddly enough, we can think perhaps in terms of the early days of MTV,
only with a more serious (but perhaps still a bit light) orientation.
Programming over the 24/7 clock would consist of logically connected
videos from the existing @Google library ...
Plus scheduled live spots by Googlers and (perhaps) even Google users
who are using Google services in particularly interesting ways (these
could be solicited via @YouTube). Plus new videos of course, some
specifically crated for this venue.
The devil is in the details of course, especially with a global reach
and many languages to consider. But it seems doable, and doesn't even
seem like an expensive proposition. Most of the required
infrastructure already exists at @Google and @YouTube !
Would people actually watch a @Google channel as I describe? Yeah, I
think lots of people would. And if you program in some other fun
content, maybe even some contests (win a FIDO key!) it might actually
work. Not everyone's cup of tea of course, but for many people YES!
