Real names
There is no evidence that forcing people to use real names on posts
reduces hate speech or other abusive postings. However, that does not
mean that there may not be a role for "escrowed" identity information
being held by a 3rd party as a requirement for posting to large
groups.
This is a very complex & controversial area. The question is, to what
extent can individuals be held responsible for abusive postings
without infringing on the ability of other users to post using the
names of their choice. Requiring use of real names on posts is not
acceptable.
There are also clearly situations (whistleblowers, marginalized
communities, etc.) where this becomes even more complicated. But the
status quo is failing. -L
