It's not just Hollywood -- AI is coming for us all
The major film studios have long been known to use every trick in the
book to squeeze writers and actors out of due compensation. The terms
"above the line" and "below the line" are often synonymous with getting
paid properly or getting nearly nothing.
The studios want to use AI to replace actors and writers. There are many
nuances, but that's what's going on. And everyone outside the
entertainment industry had better wake up to the fact that this isn't
just an entertainment industry battle here in L.A., but a battle against
abusive AI systems whose deployment could ultimately wreck untold
millions of lives.
And to those who argue that this is just technology as always, that
everyone complains about tech replacing jobs all through history, I
would assert that AI -- especially generative AI -- is of a wholly
different magnitude, unlike anything ever seen before, which if
uncontrolled will do irreparable, destabilizing damage to society that
will make previous tech concerns look like a pimple compared with Mt.
Everest.
