"I Dream of Jeannie" and ChatGPT
Technically, it is reasonable to assume that Jeannie the genie in "I
Dream of Jeannie" was an Iranian genie. Or more technically still, a
Persian genie.
How do we know this? In the series' premiere episode, 18 September
1965, when Major Nelson finds her bottle on a deserted island, opens
it, and she emerges in a stream of smoke, she initially speaks to him
only in Farsi.
That is, until he happens to mention that he wished she could speak
English -- and of course instantly she does from that point onward.
The original plan was for Barbara Eden to speak Arabic, but a suitable
tutor couldn't be found in time, and instead a UCLA professor tutored
her in Farsi.
Notably, good ol' ChatGPT gives a wrong answer to the specific
question of whether Barbara spoke Farsi in the pilot. Nor does its
"However" clause even make sense. The usual garbage from Generative
AI!
