This is just the clue I needed, thanks!  While searching for
disabledatascaling, I came across 'axis direction cs', which I had
previously overlooked.

Perhaps it is possible to generate a warning if ++ is used with axis
cs rather than axis direction cs.  That would have saved me a day of
debugging.
